Prayer flags on Tiger Hill, Darjeeling, with the Himalayas behind

Quick answer

Choose Darjeeling for a short, easy trip with tea gardens, the toy train and colonial-era charm – it's just 3 hours from Bagdogra with no permits. Choose Sikkim for bigger mountain scenery, high-altitude lakes and monasteries, with at least 5 days to spare. With 7–8 days, combine both: Gangtok (3 nights), Pelling (2) and Darjeeling (2).

Darjeeling and Sikkim share the same gateway – Siliguri – and the same giant on the horizon, Kanchenjunga. But they feel very different. Darjeeling is a historic hill town in West Bengal; Sikkim is a whole Himalayan state with snow passes, sacred lakes and deep valleys. Here's how to decide.

Choose Darjeeling if…

  • You have 3–4 days. Darjeeling is close enough to fit into a long weekend.
  • You want an easy trip. No permits, moderate altitude and a walkable town centre.
  • You love tea and heritage. Tea estates, the UNESCO-listed Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, old churches, schools and bakeries.
  • You're travelling with elderly relatives or very young children and want to avoid very high altitude.

Darjeeling highlights

  • Sunrise at Tiger Hill over Kanchenjunga.
  • A toy train joy ride via Batasia Loop and Ghoom.
  • Tea garden tours and tastings.
  • The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and zoo.
  • The Peace Pagoda, Ghoom Monastery and the Mall (Chowrasta).

Choose Sikkim if…

  • You have 5 days or more. Sikkim's best places are spread out and deserve time.
  • You want snow, lakes and big mountains. Tsomgo Lake, Nathula and North Sikkim are beyond anything Darjeeling offers.
  • You're interested in Buddhist culture. Rumtek, Pemayangtse, Enchey and dozens of village monasteries.
  • You like cleaner, calmer towns. Gangtok's MG Marg is car-free and famously litter-free.

Sikkim highlights

  • Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass from Gangtok.
  • Gurudongmar Lake and Yumthang Valley in North Sikkim.
  • Pelling's Kanchenjunga views, Pemayangtse and the Skywalk.
  • Ravangla's Buddha Park and Namchi's Char Dham.

Why not both? Sample combined itineraries

Darjeeling links easily to West Sikkim (via Jorethang) and to Gangtok (via the Teesta valley or Kalimpong), so combining them is simple.

5 days: a taste of both

  1. Bagdogra/NJP → Darjeeling.
  2. Tiger Hill and Darjeeling sightseeing.
  3. Darjeeling → Gangtok (via Teesta, ≈ 4–5 hrs).
  4. Tsomgo Lake and Nathula (or Gangtok sightseeing).
  5. Gangtok → Bagdogra/NJP.

7–8 days: the classic loop

  1. Bagdogra/NJP → Gangtok.
  2. Tsomgo Lake and Nathula.
  3. Gangtok sightseeing.
  4. Gangtok → Ravangla → Pelling.
  5. Pelling sightseeing.
  6. Pelling → Darjeeling.
  7. Tiger Hill and Darjeeling sightseeing.
  8. Darjeeling → Bagdogra/NJP.

Our Darjeeling & Pelling tour covers the western half of this loop, and we can extend it with Gangtok.

What about Kalimpong?

Kalimpong is a quieter alternative to Darjeeling, about 2.5–3 hours from Siliguri, with monasteries, nurseries and views over the Teesta. It slots neatly between Gangtok and the Dooars. See our Kalimpong, Dooars & Phuentsholing tour.

The verdict

If you can only choose one and have less than five days, go to Darjeeling – or Gangtok with Tsomgo Lake. If you have a week, combine Sikkim and Darjeeling: you'll get high lakes and passes, monasteries and tea gardens, with Kanchenjunga watching over the whole trip.

What drives the cost of each trip

We don't publish fixed prices because costs depend on your dates and choices, but these are the main factors:

  • Number of days and kilometres. Sikkim trips usually cover more distance, so vehicle costs are higher.
  • Permit-area vehicles. Tsomgo, Nathula and North Sikkim must be visited in Sikkim-registered vehicles, which are booked separately from your Siliguri car.
  • Hotel category and season. Both destinations are expensive in April–June and October; good deals appear in the monsoon and in early December.
  • Group size. A private car costs the same for one person or four, so groups get much better value per head.

Message us your dates and group size and we'll quote both options side by side.

Getting around

Darjeeling is compact: you can walk the Mall, Chowrasta and much of the town centre, using a car only for Tiger Hill, Batasia Loop, Ghoom and tea gardens. Traffic jams are common in peak season.

Sikkim needs a vehicle for almost everything outside Gangtok's centre. Plan for longer drives – Gangtok to Pelling or Lachen takes 4–7 hours – and build in rest days.

Food and shopping

Both share a love of momos, thukpa and good tea. Darjeeling is the place to buy first-flush and second-flush tea directly from estates and reputable shops, and to try its old-style bakeries and cafés. Gangtok's MG Marg is better for Tibetan handicrafts, prayer flags, thangka paintings and local cardamom. In Sikkim, look out for Temi tea, the state's own.

Easy add-ons from Darjeeling

  • Mirik – a lakeside town about 1.5 hours away, good for a half-day.
  • Kurseong – tea estates and a quieter hill-town atmosphere on the way up from Siliguri.
  • Kalimpong – about 2.5 hours away, linking towards Gangtok and the Dooars.
